Title: A50 air filter
Post by: AdrianS on 22 Jun, 2020, 17:48
Can anyone tell me if the early A50 ( 1962) had an air cleaner fitted?
If so, what type was it?
My bike just has a bell mouth perforated filter on the mono bloc.
Just wondered as the jetting may be a bit out if a filter should be fitted.
Cheers
Adrian

Should have a pill box type.

From Pitmans Second Book of BSA Twins below.

For interest;

There is not much room between the back of the single mono bloc on the early A50 and the oil tank.

I couldn't source an original air filter ( I had an aftermarket pancake filter which didn't fit ), so bought a short cone filter from Classic Bike Shop in Redditch. This fitted perfectly with about 4-5 mm clearance from the oil tank and the bike seems to run well with it.

The filters for the monoblocs have a different size than the concentric So this is what you may have. You can also get filters which have the plate recessed and an off set filter position.
