Title: BSA A65 Silencer Mounting Brackets Distance Piece
Post by: Kevev on 22 Jun, 2020, 09:05
Hi all,

Following on from my last query regarding the silencer mounting brackets, I was hoping someone might be able to help me with something that is related.

There is a distance piece shown in the 1966 to 1969 A65 parts books, which is part number 29-7565. I have attached a pic of the parts detail showing this distance piece, no. 68 and I have pointed it out with an arrow. Can someone tell me the dimensions of this spacer and where exactly it fits? The inside diameter will be clearance for the pillion footrest anchor bolt and the outside diameter is not that important, as I can make that suit the anchor bolt O.D. The thickness is the critical dimension I am wanting to know.

I have also attached a photograph which is the only one I can find that shows this spacer. You can just make it out at the bottom of the photo and it is in between the frame and the silencer mounting bracket. I don't know if this is correct, as on the parts book illustration it is shown outside of the frame?

When I first bought my BSA A65 back in the early eighties it was a bit of a dog and had been fitted with a pair of high rise pipes with two silencers on the left hand side. Consequently, when I got round to putting it back to how it should be I had no silencer mounting gear at all to give me any reference as to what I needed.

It seems to be quite hard to find decent photos of this area of the bike and when you get the chance to see the bikes in the flesh, they all have slightly different set ups and no one can say which is right.

I would just like to get it right and if anyone can advise on the dimensions of this distance piece and the correct way to install it I would be grateful. If you have these parts fitted to your bikes I'd appreciate decent photographs if possible.

Thanks again, Kev Ev

Hi Kev,
This is how they fit. One either side of the silencer bracket works well on my A50.

That's a really helpful photo, thank you.

Would you be able to tell me the length (thickness) of that spacer?

What year and model is your bike? I notice you have an oil filter fitted. What kit did you use for that?

What tyres are you using?

Thanks, Kev

The spacer goes on the end of the shaft before the frame, then you have the frame lug and then the flat silencer bracket.

If you buy the repop versions of the foot peg the length is often longer, this is to accommodate for that spacer.

I believe the reason they used the spacer was to avoid using a different foot rest mount for the scrambler (firebird) bikes.

Hi,

Interesting in the variations.  Both my A65s, '68 and '69, have no spacer and straight silencer brackets.  I fit the footrest through with the bracket on the inside of the mounting lug.  Perhaps the spacers have been lost over the years.  If I fitted the brackets on the outside the kickstart lever would probably hit the silencer.
Both bikes have stainless steel two in to one , one having a standard looking silencer and the other a 'Goldie' type.

Dave.

Hi Kev,
I think I found the spacer in the workshop, it has a 3/8" clearance hole, 7/8" O/D 5/16" thick. It has a countersunk on one side. I'm not 100% sure its for the A65, I think it came off a A10 however as you are aware BSA often utilized  spacers, fixtures and fittings across the range.

I've attached an oil filter solution that seems to work, not the best but I think you could do better with a little alteration.

Best wishes...

That's the one. The OD and bore are the same as the footrest and yes they are 5/16" long.

The Oil filter I used was an RGM one for a Norton Commando originally. Only reason I bought this was it was in the 'Jumble' box at Feked for a tenner. There are lots on the market all using the same filters. (Mahle OB5 or equivalent).

There's little crank on my silencer brackets so they fit best inboard of the frame. There's then a homemade spacer, then a 'P' bracket for the speedo cable, washer and nut. Not quite as per textbook but works well for me.

Good afternoon,

Is the speedo cable OK trapped in the 'P' bracket as speedo drive moves up and down with the swinging arm whereas the footrest/silencer mount does not.  Could this cause a fatiguing flex in the cable?

Dave.

Its been working fine. I made sure that the cable moved freely in the 'P' bracket. Better than the plastic cable tie that used to be there.
