Title: M33 stand return spring
Post by: RICH on 17 Jun, 2020, 17:00
I am trying to replace the center stand spring on a rigid M33. Part number 66-4767
I have bought a replacement spring from a reputable dealer which is about 1 1/2 " shorter than the spring I took off. It is made by Wassel and is identical to others on ebay described as the correct spring. This spring has an overall length of 135mm (5.3")
I have even put one end of the new spring in a vice and tried to pull it with a long bar but the coils barely open, yet alone extend another 1 1/2" in order to fit around the pins on the stand and frame.
I have spoken with the dealer who suggested that, "yes they are difficult to fit." I am reasonably OK at solving engineering problems, but this seems an impossible task.
Have I got the wrong spring, or am I missing something obvious?
Help please.

It is sometimes easier to remove the stand, fit the spring on and then reattach the stand. That way you can exert a lot more leverage to extend the spring while fitting the pivots - however an extra 1.5 inches sound a lot of stretch
