Title: A65 1967 to 68 Front Fork Question
Post by: Kevev on 16 Jun, 2020, 18:33
Hello again all,

I'm trying to fathom out exactly where the 47-5064 retaining washer and 47-5065 sealing washer fit on the 1967 - 68 A65 front forks.

Having just stripped my forks down I cannot find these items in the parts I have taken from my bike.

The parts book image is not really that clear. It shows these parts, numbers 36 and 37 above the top of the fork stanchion shaft. The rubber is at the top and the metal retainer underneath.

The Haynes BSA A65 workshop manual is close to useless when it comes to the front forks (and pretty much everything else) and I cannot see any reference to them in the BSA workshop manual.

It looks as though they may fit under the bottom yoke for the springs to butt up against but I can't be sure and I can't understand what exactly they seal.

These parts are missing from the 1966 parts book, although the rest of the fork assembly is pretty much the same thing. Also missing from the 1966 parts book are the 68-5170 rubber washer and 68-5171 retaining washer (parts 2 & 3 on the parts book image) at the top of the damper rod. I'm also wondering what these items are for as well?

I have attached images of the parts and hope that someone can explain just what their function is.

Thanks.

Hi,
The sealing washer butts up against the bottom yolk inside the fork sleeve, underneath the sealing washer fits the retaining washer above the spring.

The purpose is to stop moisture, dirt etc. running down the fork stanchion stopping corrosion and premature wear.

Best wishes...

Thanks for the information, I'm guessing the inside diameter of rubber washer must be a pretty good fit on the fork stanchion to make a watertight seal.

It makes sense though and I'm guessing it stops the water which may enter through the very small gaps in the top fork shrouds/headlamp brackets. Other than that the gaiters make a pretty good job of keeping water out of there.

How about the rubber washer and retainer at the top of the damper rod? They're inside the stanchion so no need for waterproofing there? Any ideas?

According to BSA to prevent oil leaks - the rubber washer is a tight fit in the fork shaft so I presume to stop oil leaking through the top nut threads.

Below from July 1966 parts bulletin G37.

I think this is reference 2 in the parts diagram Julian.

The ones mentioned go between the spring and the bottom yoke.

Hi Kevev,
You are right the rubber diameters should be an interference fit to ensure the seal. I tend to make then myself as today's proprietary washers and fork sleeve aren't the best so the fit has a lot to be desired.

Julian has answered and referenced your second question regarding the rubber washer and retainer at the top of the damper rod in his post.

Best wishes...
