Title: SLOPER VALVES
Post by: mark quinney on 06 Jun, 2020, 21:55
 Hi all
A few questions reference Sloper  valves I have a 493 overhead valve Sloper  which has worn valves
1     Does anyone know where i can get new valves that  don't require any machining and are a direct fit
2       Does anyone know of a bike or car valve of a similar size that would fit with just a bit of machining and if so where can I get them  (  I know Cornucopia sell valves that require machining  which may be the way I go )
3        I've been in touch with a company that make valves but to have them make two works out very expensive (  approximately £70 plus VAT each  )  , but if I had a batch of 20 made it  would bring the price down to approximately £35  Each .  Does that seem expensive and if it's not would anybody be interested in buying any if I had them made
Cheers Mark

I have used Chevy bigblock exhaust valves and cut them to right length

Hi Gustafsson
Thank you for the reply I'm not too familiar with Chevy engines  so did the valves come from the 454 and if so which particular model car or are they all the same size or was it off an even larger engine and again if so which model would they be fitted to so I can try and track them down regards Mark

Hi I think I already posted this somewhere.

Chevvy Big Bore valves are 1.72" as opposed to the Sloper 1.75". thats a difference of 030". I have just ordered a pair of the Chevvy valves and I am thinking of having the valve seats and guides remade to fit. The valve guides etc look as if they need it anyway.

My Chevvy "big bore" valves have arrived. Tomorrow I'm taking them to my local engine man so that we can take a look at the possibilities. Sorta what would need doing etc. I'll keep you upsides with things as and when.

Just had a chat with local engineer and discussed the possible use of Chevvy valves. It would entail quite a bit of machining to make them fit but not so extremely difficult.
To answer the Q would you use them---Only as a last resort.
Cornucopia have some valves that would also require machining so I shall look at them as well.
I have just sent email to T&L Engineering Nr Bedford and asked for advice. Has anyone had anything to do with this company.

Take care

Hi,

I do not really know anything about Slopers so forgive my input but a valve made to spec. for £70 seems not too bad and £35 each for a bulk buy looks very good.
However, is it not possible to have the old valve stem polished and the seats fettled and liners put in the guides and reamed to tolerance?  Although this could work out more expensive than the £70 valves.

Dave.

Hi Dave its like everything in this game---pays yer money and takes yer choice---The bike is not actually mine but my sons so I need to examine all the possibilities then we (he) can make a decision.

Definitely take your point about having them made and would happily do a share in a bulk purchase, but there is an element of doubt about ever seeing the return on the monies involved. Might sell all of em in a couple of days or they could be in my shed long after me. Its not really a dilemma because I have a couple of solutions????

However if anyone wishes to join in for a group purchase Ill happily cnsider it.

Take a look at this Ebay listing. Not what you want, but he's worth contacting, he has the old stock from an Australian valve manufacturer. I bought a set of 1935 600cc Sloper valves from him last year, but you will need the part numbers for your model & year,, since we can be sure they changed over the years.

Hi Les Thanks for that. I shall certainly contact said man in Oz.

Hi Mark would you care to share with me the name of the Co you contacted about making valves.

Hi Dave your thoughts about £70 not being excessive is absolutely right, cos I figure that by the time I've bought "almost fits" and had them machined etc there probably won't be much in it.

Can anyone assist me with a part No as I don't seem to be able to find it.

Your help and advice very much appreciated

Mike,
1929 parts book shows the following for the 4.93 HP twin & single port: part number 24-490 for both valves. See attached.

Bevan

Hi Guys.

"The book"??? Gives the 1929 ish Sloper valves as for a 557 and 493 OHV's being the same (Also Blue Star.) What I can't find is whether the valves for the slightly later 493 twin port are the same or interchangeable. Can't find the dimensions.

Help and advice please. What are the differences

Hi Mike, not sure if this is any use - its from the 1930 parts book. Reckon the valves are part number 24-490 - some dimensions are shown.
Cheers,
Bevan

I wonder of the "...valve complete" with the 24-485 part number includes the collets perhaps. Oherwise, what would "complete" mean ?
Cheers, Bevan

You are probably right but I guess it could mean valves, colletts, top washer and springs. Dunno.
