Title: Longer studs for new (thicker) sump plate - B31
Post by: chrisb on 04 Jun, 2020, 20:03
As part of my B31 (1954) refurbishment, I bought one of these alloy sump plates with a removable magnetic drain plug:

Unfortunately, the existing studs are much too short to fit.  Does anyone know where I can get longer studs, or even suitable Whitworth bolts?  The threads measure 6.3mm outside diameter.  Many thanks.

Hi,

It may be worth asking Feked if they have them.  They must know that longer studs are needed so why not offer them at the same time.

Dave.

Feked do sell s/s Whitworth Allen screw sets so could well have the studs or Allen screws that you need.

Many thanks!   Will look it up..

(I emailed Fecked a few days ago but they haven't replied, and I couldn't see anything that looked suitable on their site).

As you will not have to remove it as often as you would with the standard sump plate (as it has a drain plug) you could just use allen screws. As long as you are not too brutal you shouldn't run too much risk of stripping the threads in the crankcase.
I have fitted these to all my bikes and went to the trouble of making studs to fit, then wondered why I bothered!!

cheers
Pete

Hi,
If there's gauze filter fitted, I prefer studs to fix the sump plate. The filter needs periodic cleaning and any issues with the thread will be on the studs not the casing.

Worth a look here, very professional with wide range of excellent fixings:

Best wishes...
