I have a 1948 B31 with telescopic forks, I am putting the forks back together soon (just had an eye operation) so when I can see properly again, I have never quite managed to find the best way to seal the thread of the oil seal holers, I hear they used a sort of twine, I tried PTFE tape but it wasn't good, can anyone suggest the best method. Thanks Guys
Hi,
I guess everybody has their own solution.
The usual method was twine wrapped around the bottom of the fork thread, crossed over then the seal holder screwed into place and the ends of the twine trimmed. I have used plumbers hemp and non setting Boss jointing compound in the past which works well.
Now I twist PTFE to make a twine like cross section fitting as twine method with some blue Hylomar around the last few threads. The Hylomar doesn't harden so easily undone in the future.
If the forks seal holders do not butt up against a lip I wrap the threads with the PTFE tape, there is a right and wrong way to wrap the threads, using addition jointing compound will help. Use a good quality tape and I find PTFE tape for gas use is too thick for the fork threads.

I smear silicone on the threads then screw down. Never have problems.
