Title: M21 timing pinion marks
Post by: morven21 on 31 May, 2020, 19:43
Hallo People

I have just returned to the fold, after a long absence, due to not being able to get all work gear in the sidecar.  I have had an M21 in the shed for way too long, and am now resurrecting it. It was built up from bits by a mate, to do Banbury vintage runs, in the early 90's. It has a 1932  250 frame, an a '49 engine, 6 spring clutch. He geared it up with an A10 gearbox sprocket, for a max of 70 mph. The mag was ailing when i got it, an is now doornail dead. So, going to take it off, i found i couldn't get any pinion timing marks to line up with their fellows, AT ALL.  On exhaust cam is a dash an a dot, same on inlet. On big intermediate wheel is a dash. Nothing on crank pinion. I found that, if engine is at TDC on compression stroke, the exhaust dash an inlet dot point directly at crank pinion. Question: is that it? I don't want to remove mag pinion without having some marks correct. I don't have a "book" yet, to tell me where what marks should be where. Comments, please?  Finally, who's good for parts, these days? I used to go to Vale Onslows in Brum, wayback, when was running an M21 an Mk 1 Interceptor fulltime, they never failed me.

Incidently, the fuel tank fitted is one from a hand gearchange model, as evidenced by the three mounting bolts sticking out on offside. I f anyone wants one of these, i would be happy to swap it for a standard M/B series tank. It's in good nick, no leaks, has the triangular hole in middle for instrument console, good knee rubbers.

No timing marks on the mag pinion I'm afraid...that would be tooooo easy. Have a look at the article here and all will  be revealed  http://wdbsa.nl/ignition_timing.htm
As for parts, try Russell Motors or Draganfly for starters.

have fun!
Cheers
Pete

There should be a dot and dash on the crank pinion. The dot is hard to see being at the root of the teeth at the bottom of the V if you like. The cam wheel will have a dot and a dash, so the right cam wheel dot lines up with the dot on the crank pinion. The other left cam use the dash to line up with the dash on the crank pinion. The crank pion will have the dash at about 10 o clock and the dot about 2 o clock. I hope this makes sense.

PeteC, Idie, thank you. I'll have another look at crank pinion. No, i know there's nothing on mag pinion, i remember timing up from way back, but i never had occassion to take off a mag or other pinions. In the late 60's, early 70's M's were still "current" bikes, the mags an stuff hadn't yet died. I remember when a mate bought a 500 kwacker triple we had im on the corners every time. U could actually see rear jumping out in little hops. Scary. Russel motors, sounds familiar. Ok, 'll just look at link, an get onto those two. Will update you. Y'health, Mark.
