Title: 1967 A65 Lightning Rear Mudguard Stiffener Bracket 68-6768
Post by: Kevev on 29 May, 2020, 11:39
Hi everyone. I am just in the process of an upgrade / restoration on my 1967 BSA A65 Lightning.

I am trying to figure out juts exactly where the mudguard stiffener bracket, shown in the parts book as part number 68-6768. From the images in the parts book it appears to be positioned inside the mudguard and located in between the rear light unit and the mudguard mounting support bridge, which straddles between the rear shock absorber mounting points?

Is this stiffener simply bolted to the underneath of the mudguard and serves no other purpose other than (as it's name suggests) strengthening the rear mudguard at that mid point?

I have never had this stiffener bracket fitted to the bike but if it is necessary, or would improve things, I would like to get one, or make one to do the job.

Any information that you guys could give me about this part, including photographs if possible, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and best regards,

Kev Ev

Not sure I can help Kev but just in case, can you confirm the part number again please?

It's just that I have checked in the 'partsbook', diagram on Page 64/ parts list P65 refer to two 'brackets': 68 6767 (which sits on top of the mudguard) and 68 6770 (which sits further back and under the mudguard)....

Regards,
Dave.

been a longtime but if same as a Thunderbolt there were an Arch bracket that bolted on the rear shocks , and the arc bracket .
the Arch goes over the top of the mudguard and the arc goes under to sandwich the mudguard, bolts through all three parts saves pulling a hole through the guard.
looking at the parts book you can just see 68-6768 stiffner bracket peeping under the guard.

I made some wooden profiles up and using a butterfly press made a few spares up.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies and apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I've been a bit busy over the last couple of days and I've received no notifications of your responses.

In the 1967 A65 parts book, the 'bridge' bracket that goes in between the shock absorbers and provides the main rear mudguard mounting point is item number 43. It is described as 'Bridge' and is BSA part number 68-6767.

The other piece that I cannot figure out is item number 40 and is described as 'Stiffener Bracket'. It is partly shown underneath the guard in the illustration and is BSA part number 68-6768.

Thanks.

This stiffener connects to the rearward bracket on the support rail, via two(one either side) small connecting pieces called Support Rail Bracket p/no 68-6802. As you will see, these are slightly bent elongated strips with two holes, one for the 'ears' of the stiffener and the other for the bracket on the support rail.
These items are not shown in the 1969 parts list but were there in the 1970 parts list. The 1970 support rail, had the rearward bracket as described above, but I'm not sure if the previous model years did.
Hope this clarifies.
Chris

Thanks for that Chris, I had thought this was what it may be for but it wasn't clear from the parts book illustration.

You have confirmed it though.

Much appreciated.
