Hi folks,
hopefully getting to grips with this mongrel but need a bit of light shone on a wee problem. :-[
Put the timing cover back on carefully, ensuring that pushrod mechanism was in correctly and kicker return spring was hooked on. Plug out...kicker installed...turned engine over three times and returned fine...on fourth kick (by hand) the kicker would not move. Don't want to force anything in case it breaks! Any clues? Please?
Not sure what your bike is but could just be gears not engaging nicely.
Try shifting into top and, with rear wheel off the ground, rotating rear wheel forwards to turn engine over a bit, back to neutral and then try again.
Cheers,
Bernie
Difficult not knowing what bike you are talking about. Sounds as if the kickstart quadrant has jammed on the ratchet gear.
Thanks for the info guys, appreciated. I'll have ago at turning it over in gear first Bernie.
Idie ...there is a bit of movement initially as the quadrant moves then goes solid....as if it's not engaging on the wee gear ring.
Can only check with the cover on as the kicker spring will fly off if I kick it over without the cover...duh!
Oh it's a mongrel..pre OIF b25 with, what i believe to be,
an Early/Mid sixties b40 engine.
Cheers, Pete
Well,
took the timing case off again, stuck it in gear and rocked the back wheel to free it off.....worked.
Took the kicker spring off and engine turned over nicely, quadrant engaging just fine. Spring back on, reassembled, turned over nicely without plug in, kicker returning no probs.
Put plug back in..tickle tickle...second kick and away she went...rattly at the top end tho....but they all do that sir don't they?
Thanks guys, one problem solved...the next one won't be far away eh?
Pete. ;D
this is a common problem with the older bikes, the Triumph did it recently, in the past we have had to grind the first tooth on the kick start quadrant to stop it catching.
If you have the Rupert Ratio singles book he mentions the top end rattle and uses his own technique to set the valve clearances which he describes.
That results in slightly reduced clearance and hence reduced rattle - might be worth checking out?
Cheers,
Bernie
I was just reading that very part today Bernie, so will have a look this week. :)
