Title: 1972 A65 clutch binding
Post by: Mezzman3 on 17 May, 2020, 23:49
I have problems rebuilding my clutch assembly and I've worked out that the thrust washer is way too thick! Does anyone know what sort of end float is allowed on the assembly and I cant seem to reference it anywhere. Are there different thicknesses?  Have I bought a triumph one?
Any help would be very  welcome.  Regards Andy

If you can, can you post an image. There are 2 thicknesses for A65, early 4 spring clutch and late 3 spring clutch. I believe the 4 spring type is thicker

The baskets tend to wobble on the 3 spring type (built up of fewer components and inferior in design but it saved the factory money), the wobble is made better (hardly any) or worse by the wear on the Cush drive centre. The rubbers wear and are a pig to replace, the spider also wears itself into the back plate, I've spent many an hour with that back plate on a flat sheet of grit stuck to a Payne Of glass getting it flat only for it to be as bad a month or two later. If you remove the back plate and it shows signs of wear, then replace the complete Cush drive And save yourself the heart ache later. It's also cheaper than replacing the components bit by bit

No sign of significant wear on the back of the cush drive it all looks good. I have the three spring clutch so I assume that I must have the four spring thrust bearing which us around 8-10 thou too thick. Does that  sound about right? Can I get the correct washer anywhere  or is modifying what I have the only option?

Someone might be able to give you measurements as I have stopped using the BSA arrangement and switched to a Bob Newby belt drive which stopped My hair going grey instantly.

Hi,

I have just checked a couple of thrust washers from the earliest 4 spring, which has two thrust washers and couple of later ones including a new 3 spring.  They all seem to be 0.050" thick.  Is this a new thrust washer?  When the centre is tightened up there is no end float but just the play/wobble of the basket on the rollers and any wear of the rollers on their track.  There can also be wear on the back of cush drive centre where the bearings run.
If you have the old thrust washer then put that back in, in order to eliminate everything else as the problem.  If everything checks out OK then your first assumption is probably correct.  Some of the washers only have one bearing face so thinning it down is possible but 8 to 10 thou will take quite a bit of work.  Who supplied the thrust washer?

Dave.

The problem seems to be with the cush drive centre and the guy that sold me the washer which is correct btw is going to sort it for me.
