Is it possible to access the chain oiler on an early A50?
Has the primary drive cover got to come off or can it be accessed with everything in place?
Also, I'm not a paid member of the BSA owners club ( I am for the BSA Bantam club) , can anyone tell me what the resources are like? I am after a copy of the early ( 1962-63) WSM. Got a copy for 66 onwards but there are differences between the models.
Hi Adrian,
pdf's for the Workshop Manual, parts book and owners manual are free to download from the members area on the website. It's worth joining just for that. Plus, you get a copy of the Club mag, The Star every month to boot!
Yes, they are very different to the 1966 models, the rear brake arrangement and speedo drive source for instance.
The chain oiler however, is the same as the later models being a banjo and is held into the far end of the rear primary chaincase on the crankcase side by a bolt. So, you don't need to take the cover off, but getting a spanner in there isn't easy. As they are well known for lubricating everything in the vacinity apart from the chain itself, most owners blank them off. Or, to make it easier, take off the rubber hose (if it hasn't already disappeared/perished), slacken the bolt and point the outlet upwards. Put a small rubber cap over the end of the outlet pipe to stop and crud finding its way into the chaincase and Bobs your uncle as they say.
Cheers
Just what I wanted to hear!
I've also downloaded membership forms and get them sent off tomorrow!
