Title: New battery.
Post by: tdc on 08 May, 2020, 18:57
Sadly my 6.v. battery is kaput .so decides to get a new one easy no ? no. apparently the acid to get the thing going can no longer be supplied by post and I am at a loss to see where one goes to obtain the stuff .So I thought I would try a gell battery , all I could find were mountains of 12 v. and very small looking 6v. ones . which finds me at a loss .....If anyone could comment please .Rich .

Hi,

A good battery supplier should be able to provide a battery ready to go with acid and charged up.
Also, check out Paul Goff, he seems to have  good selection of electrical stuff.

I have one of these on my 6v B31, they seem to have a good write-up and stay charged for months if not a couple of years. Below site is nothing to do with me, just saying.

not looking in the right place then, the rules regarding selling of battery acid were changed due to being unclassified as a weapon. my local suppliers still sell batteries with acid packs. If you want the drier type, many use the cyclon type from HAwker https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=hawker+6v+cyclon+battery&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=hawker+cyclon+battery

I've put gel batteries on a couple of my bikes and certainly wouldn't go back to conventional type. As said they hold their charge for much, much longer.

I use 6V lead-acid gel batteries which are sold everywhere (most made in China).  One simply fastens three of them together with hot-glue to give a 12AH  unit which fits perfectly into a faux-Lucas battery case and holds a complete charge for months on end without use. None of my machines has an electric starter, so it's the perfect solution for me.  See attached photo.

Most batteries are still available - my A10 needs a B38-6A; 6v, 13Ah - size is critical to fit the battery tray - I can get this from my local battery shop. I also enquired at my local bike shop and they will put acid into a battery that I take in - so maybe check with them first then buy a battery on line and get the bike shop to put the acid in.

Cyclone batteries are ok unless you intend to due long runs.
They have trouble gassing off if charged at high rate for a long time.
I have thrown away many cyclones that have overcharged and blown out.

Do you have a voltage regulator?

I just bought a couple of new 6v 5AH Cyclones, will glue them together like G.L says and I'll have 10AH. I've also installed 6v LED so the batteries should be good for a long run.

I bought a 6v 14 Ah battery from the bike shop in Witney, Oxfordshire. Filled up with electrlite and also charged. It's a good sized battery for the bigger bikes and only £34. I have never tried gel although many bikers swear by them. I also had some 6v 240Ah batteries delivered for my narrowboat from the Battery Store and they came fully filled with acid. They have a vast stock of batteries both big and small with voltages from 2v upwards
