Hi all
Hopefully going to start rebuilding my 493 TwinPort sloper engine this weekend but having trouble with my main bearings my problem is which way round does the roller bearing in the photos go . The set up should be ( I believe ) caged ball bearing next to the crank web then a spacer then this roller bearing then the crank case then the Cush drive as it's on the drive side of engine . My question is which side of the bearing aims towards the crank or does it matter , Photo one shows the bearing with a curve in the cage towards the centre of the bearing and a lip at the back curving out , Photos two shows the other side of the bearing with the cage bending out and photo three shows a side view with the outward curve at the top in the photo and the curve towards the centre at the bottom of the photo hope all that makes sense so if anyone knows which way round it goes could you please let me know regards Mark
The weekend is here and I would like to start getting the engine built does anybody have any ideas at all about this bearing ? regards Mark
Hi Mark
As you know I don't have a direct answer never having had my engine apart.
There is a youtube video showing the generic rules for fitting taper roller bearings,.
This states that the bearing race with an interfence fit attaches to the totating component.
This should pint you in the right direction.
cheers
Dean
Hi Mark,
I haven't had mine apart, but here's a couple of images of a fellow Sloper owners bearings, which he says have caused no problems.
Cheers, Bevan
Hi,
This bearing looks very much like the two part bearing used in A10s and A65s. Is it a two part bearing with the outer race fitted to crank case? If so I would say that the lower side in your picture goes in to the installed race. I believe that it will only go in one way.
Dave.
Hi Dean , Bevan and Dave thank you for your replies
Dean I looked on the Internet and YouTube etc and learnt a lot about bearings but unfortunately nothing about which way this one goes round I may try and contact the manufacturers if I don't learn any more today
Bevan thank you for the photos , please thank your friend for me , the second picture shows the caged ball bearing that fits against the crank flywheel the bearing I'm having a problem with is the one behind that one which can't be seen when in situ .
Dave yes it is a two-piece bearing and the outer race fits inside the crank casing but unfortunately the inner race can be fitted in the outer either way round . Part of me says fit the inner race with the curved outwards part of the cage away from the crank so maybe push oil back into the sump although it is only splash feed to this bearing but then the other part of me says install it the other way round so that the part of the cage that curves into the centre of the bearing will hopefully stop any oil escaping into the primary drive case although most of the oil should be stopped when the cush drive is bolted on tightly . Hope I've explained that well enough if you have any further ideas please get back to me regards Mark
Hi,
Here is an image of an A10 bearing.
Dave.
Hi Dave
Thanks for the photo it shows the curved outwards part of the cage well and it's very similar bearing to mine other than the outer race as a seal /lip which mine doesn't but if I'm looking at this correctly on the A10 the outer race would be fixed into the crank case and the inner would have to go straight onto the crank which means the curved outer part of the bearing cage would be up against the crank flywheel as it can only go in one direction,so on mine the curved outwards part of the cage would most likely also be aiming towards the flywheel which answers my question thank you very much for your help regards Mark
Mark,
Glad to have been of some use.
Dave.
