I am in the process of stripping a B175 engine I recently acquired.
I am stuggling to get the alternator rotor off the crankshaft. a problem I haven't enocunterd on other engines.
I have soaked the shaft in penetrating oil, applied heat and used a three-legged puller. All to no avail. So far all I have succeeded in doing is to pull the outer alloy body housing the magnets off the steel centre!
Before I attack it with an angle grinder has anybody got any suggestions?
Good evening Dean,
I had a pressure release valve well and truly stuck in some cases and had tried everything that I could think of. I looked on line and came across a video in which a stuck bolt was made unstuck by using an arc welder. I tried this and it worked. The stuck item came out very easily.
So set up as if you are going to weld something to the stuck bit of the rotor but do not put the earth clamp on the rotor but maybe on the other end of the crank. Strike an arc to the stuck bit and it should become easier to get off.
Dave.
Thansk for the tip Dave.
I am going to try and distract myself from the job for a few days, (I have to do this often for want of patience) and give the penetratiing oil a bit longer to work. If no joy then it will be out with the welding kit. Only mig I'm afraid so maybe not enough current
Hi Dean,
MIG worked for me. Even if you do not get a good welding bead it should work as it is something to do with the current passing from one component to the other. You could also leave the puller on under a bit of tension so it comes off when the bond is broken.
Dave.
Just to update
It needed the angle grinder in the end >:(
A tip Dean, don't cut it all the way though as you'll more than likely also cut the shaft, cut it within a mm or 2 then get a nice sharp chisel and hit square into the cut (doesn't matter if you do it following the shaft line providing the cut is not V shaped if it is V shaped you will have to do it 90° to the shaft, a good whack and it will crack the Piece leaving it to slide straight off. If you are doing it at 90° then you will want to put some Support Under the shaft.... if you do bugger the shaft, Rex Caunt sells new shafts.
Cheers Allan
Today I put in a large order for parts from Rex but happily it did not include a shaft. I had already done jusr about what you advised.
Glad you got it sorted Dean
I had the same issue and found that if you put the puller on and tighten as far as it will go and then just leave it 'stressed' for a couple of days it will release
