hi,
being a bit rusty with motorcycles im a bit baffled. I have a bsa a65 1964. I have just serviced it and drained the primary chain oil. i filled it with 1/4 pint as in the manual but nothing drained out of the level hole at the bottom of the primary chain cover. i kept topping it waiting for something to come out and nothing did. i then drained it again and 2 and a 1/4 pints came out. Im sure i didn't put that much in but maybe i did, but i cant understand why nothing is coming out of the level hole. ive prodded it with a screwdriver and plastic tube and it doesn't appear blocked but maybe it is? any tips would be most welcome.
You did take out the correct screw for the level?
Did all of the oil come out of the drain screw?
If so, there may be a blockage at the level screw so a bit of a pain but remove the primary cover and clear any blockage. Also a good time to check chain tension while the cover is off.
Hi Adrian,
Many thanks for your reply, its the first time ive ever used a forum and I think it might not be the last time! I think ive used the correct drain screw as its the correct one on the diagram in the manual ive got. ive tried to attach a photo but it says the file is too big. the level screw is just forward of the tip of the brake pedal. I guess its the only explanation the hole being blocked but a thin screwdriver went in a long way.
Hi,
The A65 primary case used different systems for draining and level over the years. Your drain could be a section cut out of the screw hole and a small hole for the level as the attached image. As Adrian suggests you probably need to remove the cover to see which cover you have and method it adopts. If it is similiar the the attached image the small hole is probably blocked.
Best wishes...
Hi,
The depth of the hole is to accommodate the screw so if you have an air line or a bit of tube that is a good fit in the hole try blowing air in to the primary case. Gently at first to see if it is blocked and then a bit more for forcefully to unblock it. As has been said it is worth removing the cover to see why it has blocked. If the cover has not been off for a while sludge can build up and the drain hole is quite small.
Dave.
hi Adrian , Bess and Dave.
thankyou very much for your help, I understand I lot better whats going on now and the picture explained it well. I think I will take the cover off and clear the hole and and as Adrian suggested check the tension as well.
best regards
You may be surprised by the amount of sludge at the bottom of the case. Remember any clutch plate dust or wear will form a sludge with the oil. Also you probably will need a new gasket if someone has used gasket goo on the gasket.
