Title: 65 Top Yoke
Post by: wardy on 26 Apr, 2020, 14:06
Hi folks - building a 71 Lightning and can't get the steering head together. Stanchions and upper yoke seem misaligned with the stanchions fitted in the lower yoke. Immediate thought was that the steering stem is bent (it appears to slope away from both stanchions by about 2mm over its length, meaning the shaft is too far back in the socket to get the nut on), but further intrigue is added by the upper yoke being marked 97-4036 when the parts book says 97-4084. Stanchions are (as far as I can measure) straight and parallel.

Hi,
Have you got a workshop manual? section E describes fork alignment. Use the images to line up with blows with a lead hammer with a soft metal drift. In fig 9 case, a long tube over the longer portion of the stanchion and lever until in line.

Best wishes...
