Title: Lightning starting
Post by: Willie Dee on 25 Apr, 2020, 16:04
OK here we go, I have a 64 Lightning which just does not want to start, have been in a huff with it for a couple of weeks but today went back to try again. Checked the battery first and had 12.5 volts, couple of kicks and nothing, stuck jump leads on it and it fired up first kick,so I suspect the battery is done and just not giving enough to the ignition. How many would agree? I also noted on a comment here that when fitting electronic ignition, the 6 volts coils should be swapped for 12 volt coils. The bike is fitted with Wassell ignition ( I never fitted it) and the install instructions I got with the bike say nothing about changing them. So before I email Wassell do we think they should have been changed? BTW It still has 6 v coils on.

have you got the instructions for the kit?

RECOMMENDED IGNITION COILS
Wassell part number WW19375 (x2). 6 VOLT SINGLE OUTPUT COIL
Wassell part number WW19371 (x1). 12 VOLT DUAL OUTPUT COIL

HT LEADS & SPARK PLUG CAPS
We recommend fi tting a good quality 5k resistor type plug cap
Non-resistor caps can also be fitted

tried to attach a copy but file too big. if you need a copy I can email you it.

Hi mate i have just fitted a wassel to my lightning, along with a new 12vlt dual coil, and power module, so far no issue starts on second  kick nearley evry time, the only issue i had was the plug caps were not screwed in properley i had to trim the wire back a little and then i bought some new NGK caps screwed them in perfect i have got all the wassel manual if you need one Good luck

Wassell again, as you have probably gathered I don't like Wassell products. I have spent so many wasted hours over the years fixing or bodging Wassell products that don't quite fit it's untrue.
However, I do use 'Genuine' Lucas products that are apparently made by them and to be honest, I was quite impressed with the new Headlight shell and rim. Well finished and the rim fits perfectly. Only problems, yes problems, there was no earthing terminal which is usually riveted towards the bottom, the idiot light holes are slightly big and the idiot lights (Genuine Lucas again) flop about in them plus no loom clip to keep the wires out of the way. To fit the parts from the old one would require drilling the new shell and that would create a rust spot. Mind you, that may not be a problem as my confidence in the Chrome plating lasting a couple of seasons use is not at an all time high. I'll report back next year!

I don't think the Lucas products are as good, now they are owned by wassel, when they were L.A.P they didn't seem as flimsy. The headlight shells still aren't the same gauge steel as the originals.

I haven't used the ignition but it is made by Vape who are a good maker of electronic ignitions.
