Does anyone out there have a smiths 150mph speedometer? mine is cream crackard, i dont fancy the chineese import route, i have been told that the original bsa cable does'nt fit the new speedo??
not sure though can anyone shed some light on the subject please
Best bet is to get you're repaired. A decent clock that's adjusted and calibrated properly Will cost a lot more to buy than getting yours fixed.
it wont be cheap but there is a chap who gets around bike shows who restores them.
cheers for the replys, mine has a damaged crimped bezel, no rubber mounts on the back, (i had to improvise with some soft rubber tube) broken glass, and when run goes to 10mph then flicks down and stays there.
Hi,
Worth a talk to this guy, his prices are reasonable for his skill. He sorted out a badly damaged A10 speedo for me for £150, I could have sold it for £300 it was that good.

Bess, it looks like he only does the earlier Chronometric gauges, not magnetics. Try Gaggs in Nottingham. They have a good reputation.
Phil Woods of Littlehampton 01903 724509 every time! He fixed the smiths magnetic speedo on my 1970 Royal Star. He only charges for the work he does and will give you a quote first. It was cleaned, the needle shaft support plate replaced, new bezel, new trip spindle seals and case (original in the wrong style case) and recalibrated. £60.
His email address is brawnywoo19@btinternet.com

Out of interest, did you know why magnetic speedo needles flap about as the speed increases? Its all down to the brass support plate as mentioned above. The tiny hole where the spindle shaft runs through wears oval and catches intermittently, slowing the shaft down. New one cures that!
Hi,
Sorry forgot he doesn't offer a repair for the magnetics, he does recommend these though:

cheers guys just droped him an email
If the cable inner is too long it will also cause the needle to wag.
Yes, that too. The length is limited by the brass ferrule at the speedo end. This fits into the 'mouth' of the speedo cable drive fitting on the speedo and should leave an amount of square drive left which is just short of the depth of the hole for it. Too short and it won't catch, too long and it forces the mechanism upwards and causes the needle wag/flap. Wassell cables tend to be too long when purchased and need some adjustment before fitting.
I buy all my cables from these guys https://www.vintagebritishcables.com/ (https://www.vintagebritishcables.com/) I've even had cables from SRM and they have been rubbish, these guys make them exactly as original, even the armour is the correct type and not just a coil spring.
The down side is they are from Canada, but I haven't had to replace another cable
Since I bought mine from them.
Hi,
A bit repeditive and I don't know him, but try here for cables. Never had a problem and he cares:
