I've just acquired the later oil feed pipes with the modified rocker feed for my early (1962) A50.
1 can anyone let me know the O ring size?
2 the feed and return pipes are different sizes. Without checking can the existing pipes be reused?
3 the PO fitted an anti wet slumping valve ( spring type ): not personally keen on them.Is the A50/65 prone to wet sumping? Not sure whether to keep it or remove it.
Cheers
Adrian
Hi Adrian.
Firstly your wet sumping issue, this is easily fixed if you remove the timing covers. You'll want to replace the spring, buy a new gasket from SRM (as they are the only ones that don't need fettling to clear the holes correctly) and buy 2x balls. Remove the pump (mount the pump upside down, fit a ball within the chamfer, grab a drift and give it a moderate bash with a hammer, don't tap it otherwise you'll end up worse than you are now, and don't whack it into next week. Discard this ball and put it back with the new ball and spring.
Whilst the pump is off you can strip it down and check for wear on the face plates. Some grinding paste or fine emery glued to a sheet of glass can clean this up. Wash everything down with some spirit/solvent/fuel etc, then reassemble. When tightening the pump body screws mount the Pump on a flat plate. Press all the parts down whilst you tighten them, this ensures the pump is not twisted in any way. The unit twins aren't prone to wet sumping, (the pre unit shouldn't be either but the ball spring is accessed within the crank area of the cases and much more difficult to access and often forgotten about when the motor is being assembled.
Refitting the pump: torque on the nuts is 7ft/lb from memory. Hand tight is often too tight. A smear of wellseal on the gasket (definitely not silicone) and you should be good to go. Tighten the 2 body nuts first. These should have aerotight nuts on them. Then once they are done torque up the the one on its own. (Manual doesn't specify an aerotight nut but it won't harm if you do. Using loctite isn't a bad idea either.
O'rings: these should be square section type, imperial size normal orings will work. But will eventually weep, metric ones will weep sooner.
On the new oil feed manifold the inlet went from 5/16" to 3/8" however you should find your 5/16" pipe will still fit, it might need soaking in some boiling water but it will fit.
Thanks Allan
Will order correct seals from one of the usual suspects next week!
