Title: a65 primary oil ammount
Post by: big al on 17 Apr, 2020, 10:58
having drained the oil from my lightning primary chain case , there was a litre of the black stuff in there , surely this is far too much , I was under the impression that it should only be 140 cc of 10/40 oil , I do not want to overfill the bike

Your correct there should only be 140cc in there I have used 20W fork oil in my A65 for at least 9 years now with no problems, also I have used that oil in all my bikes primary cases  for at least 20 years.

Thank you bikerbob,  I assume the oil is put in through the put in through the clutch adjustment hole in the side of the cover, I would take a picture and post it on here , but im new to this and have no idea yet how to do that :)

Hi,
Probably the crankcase seal behind the drive sprocket is passing by allowing engine oil in the primary side.

Bets wishes...

That's assuming a previous owner put the seal in there in the first place. Stranger things happen!

im assuming this is a engine out job to put a new oil seal in , or is it possible to do without stripping the motor ?

Hi,
I believe you can if you're careful.

Best wishes...

The oil seal is behind the primary drive sprocket and is easily accessible whilst the engine is still in the frame. You have to take the clutch off at the same so is a bi time consuming.

I would put the required amount of oil in, run it for a good few miles and drain and check how much comes out before stripping anything down.

not unknown, maybe the seal was put in the wrong way around.
or, if the brass bush is worn the oil might be getting through from the engine, which would be still able to be done in situ but more complex.

Hi al,
        As the Editor says, plus:

When you have the drive sprocket off you will expose the seal and a distance piece (part number 68-0688). Carefully remove this and check its outer diameter, the seal lip makes contact and is part of the seal. It is hardened steel, precision ground and can become worn, rub your fingernail over the surface and make a decision whether new is required. Be aware there are some soft steel replacements out there. Then remove the seal, it is usually kept in place with a number of dot punches in the casing around the seal. Carefully dress the diameter to remove the dot punched disformed alloy without the shavings entering the bearing behind. When replacing the seal add some Loctite adhesive, metal to viton or whatever the seal outer diameter material is, push the seal flush with the casing face. Re-dot punch to fix the seal, replace the distance piece with shed loads of oil to stop the seal lip from being damaged.
Reassemble the primary drive and test...

Best wishes...

Good morning Al,

You refer to "black stuff" as the oil that came out of you primary case.  Was the oil actually black? Usually the primary oil stays relatively clean compared to the oil that goes around the engine which gets contaminated by the combustion process.
If there is no seal or a very defective one, you should feel/hear the primary case being pressurised as the engine is running.
Run the engine with the small primary cap removed and see if you can feel or hear any pressure.  In theory there should be a degree of 'suck' as well.

Dave.

yes , the oil was black , which does suggest a worn seal , it looks as though I am going to busy over the next few weeks , and I thank everyone for their help on this subject
one other thing I am struggling with is tightening up the left had foot peg , it seems it still moves , no matter how tight I do it up with the left hand threaded bolt

Hi Al,

Does the footrest move just a bit or does it keep moving?  Do you have the splined washer with the flat edge that helps to lock the foot rest.  When you position the footrest allow for some wear and set it a bit high so that it settles to right place.  It might also be worth cleaning the taper on the frame lug and the footrest to help with security.

Hi Al,
The footrest is secured with a nut and splined washer as Dave described. The nut is tightened on a stud, it will be worth checking the stud is fully tightened into the frame before fitting the footrest.

Best wishes...
