Title: Fitting new A50 Surflex clutch
Post by: blackeyeian on 10 Apr, 2020, 13:40
Hi
I am ready to fit a Surflex Clutch set to my 1962 A50,  I have read different procedures in preparing the plates.
Which method is best?
Do I soak or smear the Friction plates with Fork oil?
Do I clean the surfaces of the steel plates - If so with what - Fine wet & dry or solvent?

Thanks in advance & stay safe

Kind Regards
Ian

Hi Ian,

Surflex friction plates are probably the best you can get and I have used them for many miles.  I have never soaked them or pre oiled them.  It will not take long for some oil to get on them once in use. Perhaps a smear on the slots for the tangs to ensure smooth movement for setting up.
The plain plates unless 'varnished' through over heating should be fine.  I just wipe them clean to make sure there is no gritty stuff on them.  It it also worth checking that the plain plates are completely flat and the tangs are in good condition - no burrs and square.

Dave.
