Title: Rear brake reassembly
Post by: Phil C on 01 Apr, 2020, 15:35
Afternoon all. If you don't suffer fools gladly, please read no further. On the other hand, if you're a patient sort of person, and very bored, please could you help me: when I replace the brake onto my rear wheel, before then putting the wheel back on the bike, I guess I need to place the brake plate in the correct positon (circumference-wise) relative to the speedo gearbox on the other side of the wheel, before tightening the brake plate nut? How do I do that? Phil

I know what you mean.
What I did but this may not be the accepted method was to lightly tighten the speedo drive and reinstall the wheel. I have made a very thin spanner which I can then use to tighten the nut securing the speedo drive. I then adjust the chain before tightening the wheel nuts fully and the brake reaction bolt.
I suppose if you had marked the position relative to the brake reaction bar before dismantling you would have rough idea where it goes. The speedo drive hasn't got to be exactly parallel to the swinging arm.
I made my spanner by welding up some flat steel bars to the required nut size.

Hmmm...I don't have any welding gear, nor a miller to reduce the thickness of a spanner. But hold on, there's no mention of this in the handbook, so surely it can't be this tricky? Phil

Surely if there was an issue around positioning the brake plate relative to the position of the speedo gearbox then it would be mentioned in the owner's manual or in Haynes? There's no mention of it.  How come? Am I being dim here? But Adrian seems to know the issue.  I'm confused. Any other thoughts/comments/advice please?   Phil.

Trouble with Haynes is it's a generic manual, covers all years. As pointed out on another question  , things change year to year.
My take is  there should be a torsion arm which locates brake plate in position bolted to swing arm and plate. This positions brake plate, the speedo drive will go on in a position that gives a smooth run for the cable.

Not as difficult as I first feared. Soon got it in position by trial and error: estimated position from past photo, put wheel on, noted how far out, took wheel off again, repositioned plate, refitted wheel, fine. Thanks for you help again.  Phil
