Title: D7 restoration
Post by: IanF on 01 Apr, 2020, 11:35
I have just started my D7 restoration project because I have been furloughed from work.
The forks are shot, but I have managed to disassemble them, anyone know a repair service or am I better to buy a new set?

What do you mean by "shot"?

Are they bent of damaged? Can any parts be reclaimed?
One problem with buying used ones is that they may need completely rebuilding so you are not much better off!

Well, the right hand fork (with the bracket) came apart with a bit of effort. It will need a new set of internals but the fork lower is OK. The left hand fork had no oil in it, the slider came out but is gouged, the spring and damper seem to be rusted into the fork lower. WD40, heat and brute force only bent the spring.

Glad you've made some progress. The BSA Bantam forum is very active and great for info and help. Rex Caunt is very good for mainly engine bits but does sell various other bike parts. He is also very helpful for advice and will keep you on the phone talking for ages discussing anything Bantam!

Buy new, with the covid situation you stand more chance having things delivered than referbished... saying that somethings are taking nearly a month to arrive in the post.

To add try and find someone who is recommended for their bottom bushes, when I did mine some 13 years ago the partern bushes kept falling off. The holes where you peen through to hold onto the stanchion were too small. I ended up fitting the originals which never gave a problem.
