Title: Shortening control cable outers
Post by: Rog1 on 30 Mar, 2020, 20:09
Can anybody tell me what's the best way to shorten an outer? I found a piece in the Star which describes a good way to trim the outer to size, but can you use the ferrule on the end again? If so, do you just wind the cut off bit of the inner out of the ferrule? Is there any snags or problems to look out for?
I plan to shorten the outer sheath on both the clutch cable and the front brake cable.

Hi,
I use a angle grinder with a thin blade.

The ferrules are so cheap I would use new. However it is possible to wind or pull used ferrules off as the plastic protection over the spiral wound steel inner usually gives way easily. Most ferrules are dot punched in place, so working the chuck end of a drill in the ferrule will push the punched area back to enable reuse.

Best wishes...
