Title: B31 Cast iron cylinder fin rust
Post by: sergeantpluck on 25 Mar, 2020, 23:04
My cylinder fins are rusty.

I've seen photos (in adverts) of B31/33s with pristine fins.
How is this achieved?

Polished up. Probably lacquered.

The ones on my B33 are mostly black, a mixture of paint and oil. Very unlikely to go rusty .... !
You have obviously got yours far too oil-tight !!   Any bike that is too pristine has something to hide...

Cheers,

 :) :) :)

Wat I would do: -Paint it with Hammerite "KURUST". Within about 24 hours the rust will have changed colour and solidified. Then just paint it over with whatever engine paint you wish, or maybe just some old engine oil.

Try the paint that used on log stoves, its cheap enough from any store that sells log burner like motormart. its heat resistant and looks good.
