Title: A65 Gearbox Oil
Post by: Mike Farmer on 10 Mar, 2020, 13:56
 :) :) :)

Your thoughts please.

I have always filled A50/65 gearbox until it produces a slight drip from the overflow tube.
Yesterday for the first time I actually read the book and it says 7/8th of a pint. So that's what I put in. It certainly didn't produce any overflow. So I ran a wire through the pipe and that's definitely clear.

So what do you reckon. Which is probably correct. I guess that I shall most likely top it up until it drips

HI MIKE  IF YOUVE PUT IN 7/8 PINT IT WILL STILL BE OK EVEN IF ITS NOT COMING OUT OF PLUG > YOU WILL STILL NEED TO CHECK IT REGULARLY THOUGH TO ALLOW FOR LEAKAGES ALONG WORN BUSHES / OILSEALS ETC  AS LONG AS ITS NOT TOO OVERFILLED . REGARDS JOHNBOY .

For about 20 years now for all my bikes I never go off level plugs or any other device such as on your A65 I always measure the amount out as per the manual and have never had any problems, I have a 1956 A7 and a 1963 A65 at the moment. I do not do a great annual  mileage both bikes have in line filters fitted to the return side every 2 years I change the oil in the engine gearbox and primary and renew the filters, I have just finished doing it last week. The main reason for not using level plugs etc is the bikes have center stands and you can usually rock the bikes on the center stands so can get a false reading.
