I've already mentioned this on a different post, but hope you don't mind me putting it here in case you can't be bothered to read all the stuff about my chain guard. I'm taking off the back wheel (1965 B40F), and as part of doing that I guess I need to disconnect the speedo. I've undone the hex at the front where the cable enters the speedo gear unit. Then what do I do? Phil

Do you have the owners manual ? I just followed the instructions there.
Hi Phil,
Thinking back to when I had a B40, once the hex sleeve has been undone it should slide along the outer cable a bit and the inner flexible drive should just pull out. Do not get too heavy handed with it as sometimes they can jam in a bit over time.
Dave.
Yes the hex slides up the cable but the cable is still tight in the unit. The Haynes manual just says remove the speedo cable from the drive unit.
Sounds possible it's been trying to twist the end off the cable. Perhaps carefully rotate the cable in the opposite direction to see if frees up. But be careful not to twist the end off. ( I had this problem when I first got my bike. Wrong speedo cable routing with too tight a turn in it or lack of greasing can be the reason)
The hex nut just holds the speedo cable in. The cable has a square end to it which fits into a square hole in the drive unit. It should just pull out. Give it a good tug if it has set into the drive unit.
Yes, thanks, I was just being a bit too cautious, not knowing how it fitted. Gave it a tug and out it came. Thanks again. Phil.
