Title: 8" single sided front brake
Post by: Trev on 28 Feb, 2020, 16:57
I have an A65 8" single sided front brake fitted to my A10. I want to (if possible) fit floating brake shoes. Does anyone know if such shoes are available and if so what the number(s) are? It occurs to me that I will also need to replace the round pivot pin  pin with a flat pin to suit the floating shoes, does anyone know the part number for that item?

BSA did not make floating shoes for the single sided.

The pivot for floating shoes on the full width hub was round, same as non floating shoes.

Take out the brake shoes and with some careful work with a file open the pivot radius to one with a flat base. This mod was in Motor Cycle Mechanics in the sixties. Works for me.

I have had a lot of people say that the 8" single sided front brake was very good at stopping........but my 8" seems to be very bad at stopping, I have had the new shoes out twice and checked the lead inn`s on the shoes and they are the sintered linings but still the brake doesn't seem to be that good at all...................sorry I know that got nothing to do with the floating Shoes but just thought I would ask.

Some lined shoes sold have poor quality linings, a brake specialist may be able to offer better quality and a better brake.

Hi,

Are sintered linings intended for road use?  If they are aimed more at high speed riding or racing then they may not get hot enough under normal riding - like the green linings that people used fit to improve their bakes but it never did.

Dave.

Just had quick look on the net and sintered linings could also wear out the drum much quicker.
