Title: Dynamic crankshaft balancing
Post by: DAVE BRADY on 22 Feb, 2020, 10:28
Dynamic crankshaft balancing - does it work?

I am currently putting an A65 engine back together and whilst it is apart I want to make it as smooth as possible.
Having had an A10 crank dynamically balanced in the past I consider it worthwhile.  Has anyone had this done and did it have to improvement expected?
Also, does anyone know of a good 'balancer' in North Lincs.?

Dave.

Hi Dave,
I had my A65 crank done a few years ago by Steve McFarlane. He uses a guy with super duper machinery. It made it a pleasure to ride. Only downside is it's a long way from Lincolnshire.

googling reveals many balancers, from experience my ex neighbour raced Frazer Nash and Becke Power Plus cars and got everything down to the clutch balanced at  https://bassetdownbalancing.com/ on the side of the M4 so a bit away from you, another collegue had his Nova rally car done a t http://www.robwalkerengineering.co.uk/static_dynamic_balancing.html Oxfordshire

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.
My wife's '51 Flash was done when SRM did the end feed and it is very smooth.  Has anyone heard of AMB engineering in Sheffield?  Their website looks ok but a real life endorsement is always better.
Oxfordshire is not too far if a 'while you wait' job can be done but there must be someone up this end.
Hopefully a Forum member will know and post a reply.

Dave.

Before the one mentioned in a previous post, I had my pre OIF A65 crank balanced at Bassett Down back in 1997. At the time they did the ones for SRM. I believe it's now under a different ownership than the guy back then. I have to say, it made very little difference to the vibration and turned out to be an expensive disappointment.
About 5 years later I was speaking to SRM who told me they had moved Balancing in-house and inferred the reason was due to similar experiences.
The OIF one done by Steve McFarlane was excellent.
