Title: oil feed
Post by: spike123 on 18 Feb, 2020, 23:27
hi fellas
ive just aquired a a65 lightning and found the engine is a 1966 and frame 1967 now my question is , the previous owner tried to make it look like a 1968 spitfire so he put a new oil feed pipe unnder engine with the rocker feed on it instead where it should be on the oil tank, the oil pipes were in line not crossed over is this correct ,will the new rocker feed pipe work with the earlier engine and do the oil pipe need to cross over to be correct
mark

my 66 and 67 Thunderbolts were the same engines and similar to the A50 1969 Ive now got, only difference might be rocker feed comes from tank instead of the small feeed pipe inder the engine where the oil feedin and out bolts on. its only a bolt on casting with pipes coming out.
I can reccomend Roy Bacons BSA twin restoration book.

then you need the parts book /s and service sheets, all available on the net free.

The rocker oil feed was modified to improve cam lubrication. Feed was taken from the crankcase oil manifold and the oil tank feed blocked off.

The factory service sheet explains.

This might show the oil pipe connections a bit clearer.

From the 1966 67 and 68 workshop manual

 :) :) :)

I put the later pipe system on mine and all works fine. But you still have to cross the pipes over. I'm shortly going to do the same to one which is almost at that stage. So no probs.

Will the later oil pipe junction fit the earlier engines?  Some vendors say "no".

My engine is dated as 1952. I guess they don't come any earlier and it certainly fits that. The attachment is no different just the extra pipe spigot comes out a short distance(1" or so) from the actual fitting. When I ran mine today it was pumping oil perfectly well.

Thanks
I have a feeling that the previous owner ran the bike with oil lines parallel so an engine strip might be needed

A 1952 A65? Does it have a plunger frame and sprung saddle?

I have no idea about the original frame. It was a US export and the engine is dated By Steve Foden as October 62 and first registered in California. Not original to the frame which is dated Jan 63(also Steve) and exported to same dealer in California.

So it would appear that some A65's were around for export prior to sales here.  :) :)I was a bit as well
