Title: Kick start cotter
Post by: Willie Dee on 25 Jan, 2020, 16:25
I am needing a cotter pin for the kickstart on my lightning, I have tried a new one but there must be wear as it was not a great success. I am sure I read something someplace about oversized pins. Do they exist and where would I get one? Cheers.

Remember that the pin goes in from the under side. Nut and washer uppermost. I didn't realise this but maybe the cause of worn shafts and holes in the kickstart lever? Folk tend to fit them the other way as it looks neater.

Yeh I have had them the "wrong" way, my theory was if the nut came off the pin would not fall out.

I always fit the cotter pin the 'wrong' way round with the threaded part facing downwards. This way the flat part of the cotter bears against the flat on the shaft and doesn't cause any indentation damage to the shaft. The downside is that the kickstart lever moves anticlockwise by about 8 deg.
