Hi I have a B31 which I have just bought. It is fitted with what I believe is an M22 gearbox.
When I change from 1st to second and open the throttle, it seems to be in neutral and then it kind of seems to lurch into second with a lot of out of mesh gear noise.
I have the cover off the gearbox and moving through the years the linkage sometimes seems to lock up.
Anything I need to particularly look for ?
It also seems that the Speedo is highly optimistic, would this be due to the gearbox and Speedo being wrongly matched?
If you are extra special lucky, it could be you only need to adjust the length of the link rod between the selector quadrant and the gearchange mechanism.
However, I had a similar issue getting into 3rd gear on my b33. The 3rd/4th gear shifter fork and the associated sliding dogged wheel were worn causing the dogged wheel not to fully engage into the gear when shifting. I replaced the dogged wheel but I had to have the shifter fork faces welded then machined because I couldn't find a new replacement. Shifting is now very good.
Regarding the speedometer reading, I also have this problem because the rear wheel sprocket is larger than spec. Count the teeth on your rear sprocket and gearbox sprocket to see if they agree with the manual sizes.
Hi Jim, thanks for the reply. I have checked all the sprocket sizes and they are all correct. I shall have another look at the gearbox linkage and hope its ok when i put it back together. Dennis
