Hi,
My 1967 B44R Victor Roadster needs a new petrol tap fitting and whilst I'm doing that I thought I'd try and replace the tank filters. I'm cautious though, as the petrol tank is the original GRP tank and the old filters have been in there for the past 52 years as far as I know. Any tips please on removing the old filters without cracking the GRP tank and re-installing the new with new washers? ???
No tips then. Well, I'm going to try a hair dryer. Plastic expands more than steel so we'll give it a try.
Hi,
Sorry that you did not get any tips. I think that the filters are attached to the taps so will come out with them and that the tap screws in to a steel piece moulded in to the GRP. Be careful with the hair drier as too much heat may cause the metal to expand and I do not think that GRP does.
Dave.
Just another thought. If the tank has been lined for modern fuels trying to remove the bit the tap screws in to may well damage the lining.
Thanks Dave,
On the 1967 B44R Roadster the petrol filters screw into the GRP tank separately and then the fuel taps into those with fibre washers. I've had a right job getting the correct fuel taps and was tempted to use an all-in-one instead but I'm trying to keep the bike original. I've managed to get a new fuel tap now but still to tackle the filters. I'll probably just use a 3/4" spanner in the end and try it that way and that'll be during the winter break.
Good to know someone cares though. Thanks again.
Hi,
I see what you mean about the piece the tap screws in to. I assume you have tried some penetrating oil and such like. You will get a lot of leverage with a 3/4" spanner so just be careful it is not too much. Perhaps a not too sharp tap with a hammer on the spanner may help as well. Good luck with it.
Dave.
