Title: Revs rise on full lock
Post by: Phil C on 19 Nov, 2019, 14:30
Hello everyone, I guess this is a fairly stupid question. I noticed yesterday that when I turn my handlebars full lock to the right, the engine revs rise. Not hugely, but noticeably. I guess that means the cable becomes too tight when on full lock?

As I see it, there are three places where that might be adjusted in order to stop this happening:

1. By rotating the twistgrip position on the handlebars,
2. By turning the in-line cable adjuster, which is on the cable about eight inches from the throttle grip,
3. By turning the adjuster at the top of the carb.

Am I right in saying those are the three options?
Which is the best way?                                               Phil.

Not uncommon.

The solution is whichever works best for you from the 3 options.

I would start with the twist grip position, make sure the cable emerges from it smoothly and if that is not sufficient then the mid adjuster.

And make sure the cable is sitting perpendicular where it joins the top of the carb. It can get pulled at an angle when the bars are turned to the right, causing the slide to lift. As I found out.

Hmmm, well, I'm not sure how vertical it's meant to be.  See photo.  It's not stretched taut in the picture. I mean, it's bound to fall away in that direction, as that's where it's going? Does it look okay? Phil.

The throttle cable is a bit awkward.

It has a top hat ferrule sitting in the screwed adjuster.

Normally a top hat ferrule sits in a plain unthreaded hole in the carb top without the screwed adjuster. The adjuster being midway or thereabouts in the throttle cable (which you have in yours)

The carb tops come in three types, one to fit 2 screwed adjusters, one to fit 1 screwed adjuster and 1 ferrule and one to fit 2 ferrules.

You would get a better throttle cable run without the adjuster in the carb top. You can just remove the adjuster and open out the hole to fit the ferrule but you might need to adjust the length of the inner cable.

I suggest you simply adjust the cable to give sufficient slack to prevent the problem.

In the past MOT tester often picked up this as a fault.

I see. I wondered why it was necessary to have an adjuster at the carb as well as one part-way along the cable - from what you say obviously it's not.

Anyway I'll do as you suggest, Julian, thanks. Thanks also to Mark for alerting me to a possible problem in the carb/cable area. I'm learning all the time.

Out of interest, when there is a top hat ferrule fitting into a plain hole in the carb top, what kind of fit is it? I guess just a sliding fit?

Phil.

Usually a bit of a sloppy fit.

Hi,

In my experience it is also the run of the cable that can cause this problem. When on full lock the cable should still be slack and not pulled by the bars being turned.  I always try to secure the cable to the frame as loosely as possible to allow the cable to move a bit as the bars as turned. Likewise with clutch cable.

Dave.
