Title: B33 M33 the lightest clutch

Re M33 1956
Hello, could anyone advise on which clutch arrangement would give the lightest action on my 1956 M33?

I have a four spring Triumph type clutch on my 1950 M33 and it works fine. it is light to operate.
Cable condition and routing is just as important as the type of clutch used.

Thanks Rich, I will look them up. What sort of period are we looking at and does it fit straight on to the BSA fitting?
It's a new, well lubed cable and it runs as straight as it will go. Clutch operation still heavy as hell. It is a single spring type, I will let the tension off a bit and see how that goes.
Regards.

Hi Dave,

The four spring ( Triumph) clutch was fitted to the A10  in the early sixties with the addition of a special adapter, part number 42-3170.

The six spring clutch fitted to the A 10 looks the same (or similar) to the M series six spring clutch so I would hazard a guess that the adapter might fit.

My M33 cane already fitted with the four spring clutch so I cannot say categorically that the adapter would work. I am sure there are many others out there that have been down that route, fitted one and could help.

Just an aside, if the six spring clutch is set up correctly and there is not to much wear in the various components it should be fine and save you a lot of expense. Bear in mind, the M33 fitted with the six springer used to haul around a double adult sidecar with the wife and a couple of kids on board, so it should still be fine today.

I hope this is of some use to you.

Rich

My '61 A10 has a norton 3 spring clutch. It uses the gearbox mainshaft off the plunger bsa's. Very light and doesn't drag .

Thanks Bodill and Rich again, I now have some thinking to do. Firstly I will try to find some bikes to compare. Maybe I should visit the local (Cheshire) BSAOC section.
One thing is for sure - mine will have to be changed I couldn't go for long with the one that's fitted.
Cheers again folks.

you want to ride on parades and runs on a modern ai/oil cooled Ducati with dry clutch. need to build up the wrist muscles :o

Just been phoning around. It seems that the 4 spring (Triumph) clutch is the usual upgrade, with an adaptor as Rich rightly pointed out. Burton Bike Bits offer three choices - part numbers 42-3264, all similarly priced and SRM another higher priced one. So which one to choose?
Any ideas?
Also see photo of the gear box for which the clutch is destined, is it the standard and will it fit? Can't see a number anywhere.
Thanks again
Dave
p.s. Chaz - I'd love to compare the BSA's clutch to your Ducati, but can't think of a standard squeeze test.
