Title: Side panels
Post by: Mike Farmer on 27 Oct, 2019, 16:55
 :) :) :)

Minor problem assistance please.

I wish to replace the side panels on A65---the ones I have are the early type that fit onto the manifold bolt extensions, and hide all the carb. I want to fit the later ones that have two Oddie/Dzus fasteners.

I have the relevant cross bar with the fittings but can't quite figure out the best way forward.

So advice please and a pic if anyone is able to supply one.

Thanks agen

Mike,

Here are pics of side panel mounting brackets on my 1970 A50.
Draganfly have details of the parts you might need.
What year is your machine?

Sorry to Hijack this thread but if anyone out there has a steel LH side panel (battery Cover)for a 1970 Royal Star or Thunderbolt and willing to sell, please get in touch. I've put a wanted ad in the Bazaar for a couple of months now and no luck yet.
many thanks in advance
Chris

Hi Chris.

I can't promise you anything at the moment but if my change of panels is successful then I'll have a spare. I shall let you know.

Is there anyone not too far form Andover with the newer side panels fitted that I might be able to look at. I see from the pics where the cross member fits but can't figure exactly how.

My A65 is 1963. I also wish to do this on my sons which is 1964.

Thanks but I've seen that one. Been on there for ages. However, its for a 1962-63 which is like the ones Mike is looking to replace. These also enclose the carburettor within them.
From 1966-67 onwards they fitted the shorter ones, with the winged badges up to '68 and then plain thereafter. Mine os one of the last.
The one that is currently on the bike has been 'modified' i.e. cut way at the top LH corner, probably to make it easier to line up the front oddy fastener.

Or maybe so that you can get at the "tickler". That's actually why I want to replace mine.

My '62 A65 was difficult to tickle for the same reason - especially with mitts on. I saw somewhere that there was an option that used a hinged lever that ran forwards over the button to make the job easier but not sure if that was a factory fit or not....

Cheers,
Bernie

Yes it was a factory fit. It was made in two parts. Part 1 was fitted to the fuel inlet banjo at the top of the float chamber and part 2 was a longinh lever that hinged on part 1 and rested on top of the "tickler". Part 2 then extended forward and came out between the two halves of the side casings.

Rarer than the proverbial. I do have the a part 1 so with luck I can do something with it.  Ho Ho Ho.
