Title: A10 Super Rocket - Can anyone help please
Post by: MJM_58SR on 27 Oct, 2019, 15:56
Hi all
I've recently bought a 1958 super rocket and just wanted to ask for a bit of help and advice.

The bike is dropping oil which is coming from what i think is the breather hole in the crankcase. Looking at the service sheets it shows a pipe which is secured with a clip however the bike doesn't look like it has anywhere to bolt anything to, can anyone advise please?

I can feel a little play in the head bearings and wanted to sort it out over the winter. Are the self contained bearings any good or is there something better.

I'm sure there will be more questions but any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Dropping oil from the breather is pretty normal, as long as it's not excessive, if it is then I would suggest changing or checking your pressure relief valve, which is the normal cause for this problem.

Re the steering head bearings, if there is play, it usually just needs adjusting. A 5 minute job. When you have got rid of the play, if it feels a bit graunchy then one of the races will need replacing. Worth trying first before taking it all apart to fit new bearings.
Re the oil coming from the breather, there is a tech article in the forthcoming edition of The Star which gives a good fix.

Thanks for the replies, its much appreciated.
I've had a closer look and it seems that there is a bit of movement somewhere related to the forks although i cant put my finger on it yet but nothing seems loose.

Regarding the dropping of oil i will wait for the next issue of the star to arrive.

Sorry, I should have said the December Issue as some may not have received the November issue yet.

The Star is the club magazine which is monthly. I think you can get it online at the owners club website.

Marriott with regard to the movement relating to the forks have you checked that there is no play between the projection on the brake plate and the peg on the lower fork leg. If that is the problem you can cut some shims from the appropriate thickness of sheet steel.

The Star is available to all on the Website three months after the publication date. Before then, it's only available to Members via the Members area.
So, the December edition should be available to all by March 2020 ish!

Hi, couldn't see on bsaownersclub.co.uk that older issues of The Star are available. Did I look at the wrong place? I'm a member of the Swedish Bsa ownership club only :)

Thanx

Just to correct the point about the availability of the Star via the website: You have to be  a BSAOC member  to read the Star via the website irrespective of the issue month. These issues can be accessed via the Members Area of the website.
