Title: Cable lubricant
Post by: Phil C on 22 Oct, 2019, 18:04
I bought a can of PTFE Cable Guard to use with a little clamp-on gadget (clamp gadget on outer and inner cables, stick spout in hole and squirt lube in) to lubricate my control cables without having to detach them from the bike.

I was just wondering: as it's PTFE, is it okay for throttle and choke cables?  I only ask because I wondered if the PTFE element might cause any problems in the carb, eg blockages. Obviously when applying the lube I would unscrew the top of the carb, take out the slides from the carb body (without disconnecting the cables) and let any excess drip off before screwing it back on.

Phil.

If you have a "modern" nylon lined cable, then don't lubricate it. Old types with wire wound outers do benefit from a bit of lube.
Not sure how effective those little cable oilers are - I've got one but rarely use it. I hang the cable vertically and drip oil between the inner and outer for a day or two to let it penetrate the cable but very rarely oil it when on the bike ( perhaps the ends only).
You wont do any harm with what you are using.

I use a similar oiler but with WD40 to wash out the dust damp etc. I find regular use of WD40 keeps the cables working smoothly.
