Title: C15/B40 Side Stand Frame tube
Post by: Nourish on 12 Oct, 2019, 10:35
The B40 frame I has the usual bent tube where the side stand is attached.
What's the best way to straighten this out?
Cheers

simple answer is to remove, apply heat and straighten in a vice.
more complicated answer is to remove, straighten with heat then cut the tube slide in a solid piece of metal then weld back.
reason for saying this is that its already weakened and likely to bend again.

Thanks for the reply Chaz.
If just putting a stout tube over the end and straightening isn't the best answer then perhaps cutting off the tube at the Main stand forging and removing the bent piece of tube (the middle piece) and turning up a thicker section tube to replace it?.
Does anyone know what braze to use that is compatible with what BSA used?

Ive got a piece of scaffolding pole around a metre long or for smaller diameters an old fork tube, just enough leverage.
if not available a couple of G clamps and a strong piece of wood, clamp one clamp and wood to part then heat and use second clamp to pull tube to the wood.

I had a problem with that bit of tubing coming loose. A previous owner tried to tack weld it back in place while the bike was assembled.
This cracked so the side stand/footpeg mount was loose. I cleaned everything well and just used a normal brazing rod to refix it ( the bike had been stripped by now) and it appears fine. One word of caution though; make sure you get the tubing in the correct position and that it not rotated away from where it should be - a) if not the footpeg angle will be out and b) the side stand angle will be wrong and with the stand being short, you might find the bike tilting over far too much!
