Title: Pipe
Post by: Phil C on 01 Oct, 2019, 18:54
Evening all.  Here is a stupid question. Just having a look around the battery compartment on my 1965 B40F. Coming from the top of the inside of the oil tank is a pipe which disappears off down towards the gearbox somewhere.  What is it?

Phil

Its the oil return pipe. If you look at the bottom of the engine you should see two spouts coming out. The out board one is connected to the bottom of the oil tank. That is the flow of oil being drawn in by the pump.

The inboard pipe is the return pipe. Oil being pumped back up to the tank. That pipe splits in two. Some of the oil being send up to the rockers via the coper pipe you have the dent in.

No, it's further back, rearward of the filler cap.

Just wondering: could it be a breather? If so, where should it finish up after it heads off down towards the gearbox/engine?  Phil.

It could be a breather if its at the very top of the tank.

Someone may have put a tube on it for some reason and run it down towards the chain or something. Only one to find out where it goes

What sort of pipe is it? Is it a battery breather/ overflow pipe that's either become disconnected or left in your bike from a previous battery?

Thanks for your help and advice. Finally managed to see where it went:  it finishes low down on the bike and pointing to the ground, so I guess is a breather? (assuming it's not an overflow pipe?! - just joking.) I didn't know the oil tank needed a breather pipe? Why is that needed?

Anyway, if you're interested - WAKE UP AT THE BACK THERE! - I've attached two photos, one showing the pipe leaving the oil tank, the other showing it disappearing down into the murky depths (see it there below the wire and the nut?) Below that it finishes, pointing vertically to the ground. Made me wonder about oil and the rear tyre, but anyway no problems with that so far  - I guess amounts of oil coming it from it would be so small, maybe just a slight mist?

Phil.

Breather needed because the returned oil contains air because the return side of pump has a greater capacity than the feed side and the air needs to vent.
