Title: Lucas 15d capacitor
Post by: AdrianS on 10 Sep, 2019, 18:25
Has anyone got a good source for the capacitor for the 15d distributor?
The one fitted to mine is not a 15d one; the holder for the felt pad is on the wrong side of it but the capacitor fits the distributor.
The bikes working fine but without the felt lubricating pad for the points cam. Just a bit concerned that the modern points heel may wear out quickly if not lubricated!

My '63 B40 with a 15D1 distributor has no felt oiler. It has a modified capacitor, not sure where from, but looking at the pic pg 176 RR there doesn't appear to be an oiler. Compare with the later 4CA on pg 178 which does have an oiler as part of the capacitor. With a light smear of grease every service there shouldn't be a problem.

That's what I do - a little smear of grease every few months.

The common capacitor that fits has the oiler bracket on the wrong side. These capacitors are common but the originals are not.
I am aware that the capacitor does not have to be fitted inside the distributor but could be fitted remotely. I will try this after disconnecting the one inside the distributor. If it is successful, I will "modify" the existing capacitor by soldering a bracket on the correct side so I can have a felt pad!
A project for the Spring!
