Title: C15 Star Lubrication
Post by: Ford on 07 Sep, 2019, 18:31
Hi,

new to the forum and hoping for help to keep my C15 running for another 50 years.

The model is a 1966 police version.

I have following questions regarding lubrication:

1. Primary Chain Oil (See pic. primary_chain_cover).
To top up the oil do I remove the large screw above the footrest?
Does this screw cover the clutch adjustment orifice? (Haynes manual 47 Completion of reassembly and final adjustment point 6)
Is the screw marked with tape the level hole?

2. Gearbox Oil filling (see pic gearbox_cover)
To top up the oil do I remove the large screw?
What is the hexagonal screw head to the left of the screw used for?

3. Gearbox Oil- checking level (see pic. gearbox_drain_standpipe)
To check the oil level do I remove the screw in the centre of the drain plug? As far as I understand the drain plug has a standpipe fitted.

4. Plug (see pic. plug)
What is this plug used for?

A lot of questions, any help would be appreciated.

1. Primary chain oil topped up through the screwed plug in the primary chaincase shown in your last photo. This also gives access to the clutch pushrod adjuster in the centre of the clutch pressure plate.
The screw marked with masking tape is the oil level screw - remove and top up until it flows from the hole, let excess drain off.

2. Gearbox is filled through the large hex screw on top of crankcase you see in photo one. The small hex screw in the second photo is the level screw - the large hex into which it screws has a standpipe in it. Remove small one and top up until oil comes from the hole, allow to excess to drain off. Remove large hex to drain the gearbox oil.

There is a lopt of free information available, much better than Haynes. Try this link for instruction books, service sheets and parts books for free download.
