Title: lead solder, silver solder or braze?

Hi all

Which is best when putting a new brass end on the clutch cable (engine clutch lever) normal lead, silver solder or braze. BSA C15.

Normal lead (soft) solder I believe.   In order to braze or silver solder you would have to heat the wire to too higer temperature which would remove the temper from the wire and the commercially available cables are generally soft soldered ....

If you are re-soldering old cables; copious amounts of flux and persistence will be required in order to clean all of the old oil, grease and tarnish off of the wire strands because as you no doubt know, cleanliness is the first rule of soldering.   Also, don't forget to splay the ends of the wire out into the countersink in the nipple to provide mechanical as well as solder retention of the cable.

Hi,
If galvanised wire, splay the wire and normal fluxed lead or lead free solder, worth a look:

Best wishes...

 :) :)

Normal solder, but you might just like to check around to ascertain what grade/mixture to use. I can't remember. Oh yes and before I forget prayer might come in handy.

Electrical contact cleaner is good for getting oil/grease etc off cables before soldering.
