Title: 1946 C10 Primary side oil
Post by: Rick Rybicki on 22 Aug, 2019, 13:56
Well, here I am again with more questions. The bike, 1946 C10, is "on the road" running fine but as it's been laid up for the past 50 years it's having a few niggles after it's first couple of hundred miles since re-commissioning.
After having quite messy oil leak issues on the primary side, I came to the conclusion that oil was coming out of the primary case behind the clutch so I decided to check the level in the primary case. On taking out the level plug I was treated to a gush of about half a pint of oil. Given that I'd put oil in up to the level plug only a few weeks ago....this came as a surprise. So why is so much oil getting from the crankcase into the primary case? On the diagrams for my model C10....ridgid, 1946, there appears to be no oil seal on the crankshaft. Is this a common problem? Can I do anything about it? I am about to fit a new felt washer behind the slide plate but that won't help much if the crankcase is chucking oil into the primary case. I'm also replacing the gearbox oil seal just for good measure.
Next oily issue. There seems to be quite a bit of oil seeping out from around the distributor shaft where it enters the crankcase. Should there be gaskets or an O ring. Nothing shown on any diagrams I've seen.
I don't expect to get it oil tight but currently it's a bit of an environmental hazard!!!!
