Hi,
A neighbor of mine has a BSA Lightning that has not seen use in 20 years. It ran when he last used it ;D, and it turns over on the kickstarter fine. Best of all, it has a full title. Otherwise it's in need of a complete tear-down and rebuild. What kind of price should I offer for it? US Dollar please as I'm in the USA.
I'm not looking for a nail-him-down-as-low-as-you-can kind of offer, I'm looking for what the ballpark is on fair prices between friends.
Thanks,
- Pasta
cant give a US value only to say that my recent purchase in the UK was £2000, this would have included import duty and paperwork as was like a lot nowadays are being reimported home.
my A50 is a chop, has good compression but not used for a few years and does not wet sump! I will have to strip and respray frame , rewire and probably for the best, strip and check the engine.
YOU will have to decide how much work you want to do, how much it needs or whether you want an oily rag restoration.
ebay will give the most up to date prices.
btw, back in 1985 my set limit was £1 per cc, and our first house was £25,000.. today its worth £150,000 so I suppose the £650 paid for my Thunderbolt was high then compared to the £2000
Thanks Chaz.
Your bikes are obviously cheaper, that's why all the Brits are importing them from the USA. I spent £5,000 restoring mine which was complete. I bought it for £1,500 with title. Hope this helps.
It does, thank you. Thats the kind of guidance I'm looking for...what is the ballpark for a donor bike to then throw money at :)
:)
Just a suggestion.
Look on Ebay UK and see what US imports are going for, Then knock off about 40%-50%. Should give you some rough idea.

You may find that the bike will run after a bit of elbow grease. I bought an A10 in similar circumstances and discovered the engine had been rebuilt and never run. I did a rolling restoration in the end and enjoyed every moment. $2,500 sounds about right. I get all my tips from Wayne Carini.
