Title: Metal Bits in the oil !
Post by: A10 JWO on 09 Jun, 2019, 15:31
Rebuilt the primary last year on a project A65. Cases vapour blasted. Fitted complete SRM Clutch Assembly and new primary chain and new oil of course. I might add that the rest of the engine was totally rebuilt. I have just taken the primary cover off to fit a better gasket and noticed very some fine pieces of metal in the outer chain case. I picked up a small amount with a sump magnet. The bike has only done 5 miles since rebuild, is there a logical reason for this please. Thanks.

My first suspects would be the primary chain or the rotor/stator.

Thanks Julian, just hoping that it will bed in, new against old and that will be the end of it.

I remember during my rebuild of a C11G in 1994, I fitted the 'spinner plate' against the rotor (a dished aluminium disc that was supposed to spin the oil away from the exposed coil windings on the stator. It didn't take long to disappear into the oil - lovely silver coloured liquid oozed out.
Daft thing was I didnt need it as the stator was new with encapsulated coils anyway!

I failed to mention that I did 2 miles with no oil in the primary, I did this with the outer case fitted with just 3 screws so I could test the clutch. This could be the main reason ? .
