Hi,
Can anyone please let me know what the difference is between a 1954/55 rear mudguard 42-6841 with left and right stays 426822 / 24 and the 1956/59 guard 42-6856 with left and right stays
42-6858 / 60
Any help, pictures etc. would be much appreciated. Many thanks,
Richard
Hi Rich,
Draganfly states:
1954-55 42-6841
1956-59 42-6856
1960-62 42-6904
Spitfire 42-6885
Check out Benbow at https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=7555.0 he was asking the same question as your goodself. You will also find a few pictures at that topic.
Hi Rich, I can't help with the other machines, but here are 3 pics for a 1954 S/A G Flash. The rear mudguard I believe to be a 42-6841 and as the condition matched the rest of the bike when I bought it, I also believe it to be original, as are the stays, 42-6822 & 24. I can't find a pic of the brackets but they look identical to the 42-6761 & 62 as you would expect. If you having anything to check it against, the diagonal measurement between the two mudguard stay bolt holes is approx. 441mm (17+3/8 ins).
Thank you both for your replies.
"Restorer" your mudguard matches exactly the description for the 42-6841 rear mudguard. It is longer at the front and is recessed on both sides to clear the swinging arm. It appears that there is also more clearance between the guard and tyre than the later guards so I guess the support arms have a slightly different bend, hence the different part numbers from the later stays. The two holes at the bottom (front) tie in with the guard to frame bracket used on the '54 models.
My only dilemma now is that the BSA parts book shows some of the front bracket mounting hardware was only used up to '55 implying the later guard was fitted and contradicting other publications. Decisions, decisions!
Once again, many thanks for your replies.
Rich
Rich, there is a passage in Roy Bacon discussing mudguards and brackets which includes "and were joined by a new type for the pivoted-fork models in 1954. For these a one-piece blade was used with a pair of supports and a front angle bracket. In 1956 this last was dispensed with and the blade and supports revised....". To me this means that the 1954 and 1955 models were alike and both had the stays, top U-clamp, and front angle bracket clamping to the frame. This might help. Restorer.
Decision made. Now for the crunch.
Has anyone got a 42-6841 rear guard and the stays 42-6824 / 6822 they are looking to sell?
