I have rear wheel puncture on my 1960 B33. A fiddly job without an elevated workbench. Luckily I'm at home. How much clearance do I need to drop the wheel out please? Or removal tips? I have service sheet.
When removing the 4 sprocket nuts 42-6327 my meagre tool kit doesn't have a spanner that will fit perfectly 9/16 is a shade to big 1/2 inch too small. I know there are different size references AF etc but don't know which socket to buy to use on my rear wheel sprocket. Was there a specific spanner in the BSA tool kit? What part number please?
Generally what spanner size reference did BSA use?
My BSA has a fully enclosed chain guard and I'm hoping I can remove the 42-6327's via the inspection hole so socket needed. Or should I remove the end C shaped cover and use open end spanner? Again part number please.
Any help would be appreciated, enjoy the Bank Holiday sunshine ride out, looks as if I'm out for a walk today
Thank you
You need spanners marked BSW and BSF, sometimes marked just W or BS sometimes marked both. They are not AF sizes.
The 4 sprocket nuts take 1/4 BSW (or W) or 5/16 BSF (or just BS) both are the same size, they are the same size. I use 3/8 drive sockets.
You should not need to remove the chaincase end.
It is difficult to manouver the wheel out and to get it back in.
Thank you Julian that's excellent.
Any idea where I can buy a socket to the size quoted, 1/2" drive?
Would you recommend removing silencer?
Appreciate your help
Sorry cannot advise on a supplier have not bought any spanners for many years.
Worth trying a 13mm socket on it, sometimes it will fit on a nut at the lower end of manufacturing tolorances.
When I bought my B33 the first thing I did was to buy some Whitworth spanners and sockets. Invaluable.
at my last unit the next door unit was occupied by an enthusiast who raced Frazer Nash , hill climbed a Becke Power Plus and drove a Nash Exeter on the road, He was always amazed at the amount of Brit AF and Whit spanners and sockets I had. I just pick them up when I find them.
Car boot sales are a good source or auto jumbles. combination socket sets, my Elora dates from the seventies when all 3 sorts were catered for.
Julian, where are you?
Thank you everyone. Wheel is now off! I made up a platform using 6x2 topped with 3/4 ply. Approx 8 feet long 16" wide, with back third removable. Also a smaller length platform of same height positioned to side of main platform.
Wheel bike via ramp onto main platform then put bike on main stand whilst myself standing on the shorter platform. Undo rear wheel and when ready to remove wheel then take away the removable rear end of platform and wheel has sufficient clearance to be removed.
For additional safety I supported bike via axle stands under each foot rest and also tied down front of bike to prevent tipping backwoods.
