Title: 4CA sidepoints - condenser too long to fit !?
Post by: hoogerbooger on 21 May, 2019, 19:12
sorry this seems a bit daft...but has anyone else had this problem and is the answer a hacksaw/file ?

Photo attached of the sidepoints/condenser on my B40F. The fixing position for the eye on the base of the condenser has a fixed position and as far as I can see the condensers position in the housing is set by that and the points gap set up. I've just bought a second condenser as the first was too long and I presumed must be the wrong one.. but they are the same ( Lucas label on box has code WW10039 425377 and JP54   2217)

I've just measured them the canister of the condenser is only a mm bigger but there threaded stud on the terminal adds an extra 2.5mm ish..........meaning it is nearly 2mm too long in total to fit.

Am I just being dim & missing something obvious ?

or do I just need to carefully shorten the terminal stud ? filing might be better than a hacksaw...but seems potential to break terminal as not that easy to clamp on the terminal to hold still.

just to be clear: in the photo there is about 1.5mm gap between the stud end and the housing with the smaller condenser in situ (shown). Both the replacement lucas condenser and the other non-lucas spare I have are 3-3.5mm longer than the one shown in situ.

Hoogerbooger, Long time no speak! You might remember I too have a 1965 B40F (side points.) Your post reminded me that I had some problems getting things to fit when I put in a new base plate. It was over a year ago, so not easy to remember, and I'm not sure if your problem is the same as mine was was, but if you look at my posts from 15-16 Feb 2018 it might help. Or it might not. Have a look anyway, you never know.  Phil.
